After completing his course of study in less than two years after arriving in England, he was allowed to remain in England where he completed a three months practical training course under the guidance of his then pupil master, Mr. Roger Saunders, who is now a judge in England. Mr. Codlin returned to Jamaican in October 1972 and was posted to the Resident Magistrate's Court in May Pen where he was appointed both Deputy Clerk of the Courts and Clerk of the Courts between October 1972 and August 1973. He was then transferred to the Chambers of the Attorney General where he acted as Crown Counsel between August 1973 and January 1974 when he was appointed a Crown Counsel. Between August 1973 and June 1976, Mr. Codlin was almost exclusively concerned in litigation and has been involved in many famous cases in those Chambers, including the case of Barclays Bank, Administrator General v. Hamilton. After resigning from the Attorney General's Chambers in 1976, Mr. Codlin first set up Raphael Codlin & Co. at 11 Duke Street and then went on to 2 Duke Street. The Company moved to its own Chambers in June 1984 at 64 Duke Street and has been there ever since. Between 1976 and 2004, Mr. Codlin has been engaged almost exclusively in the Supreme Court, the Court of Appeal and in the United Kingdom Privy Council. He has been involved in many of the famous cases dealt with in these Courts, including Crampard Marketing Company Ltd., Eldemire v. Eldemire and Tulloch v. Ffriend, all of which were finally litigated in the United Kingdom Privy Council in his favour. Between 1986 and 2004, Mr. Codlin is among the four leading Jamaican Advocates who have appeared in the United Kingdom Privy Council most frequently and between 2003 April and 2004 May, he holds the record of being the only senior practitioner from Jamaica to have appeared in the United Kingdom Privy Council on eight separate occasions during that period. The only other person who have accomplished that feat at the private Bar in the period in question, has been his junior Counsel, Miss Brandie Anderson. For the past thirty-two years, Mr. Codlin's practice has been confined almost exclusively to civil matters, including important cases on Constitutional Law and is regarded by many of his colleagues as having an enviable depth of knowledge of practice and procedure in civil matters.
